Chapter 31

• The doorbell of my apartment rang while I was cooking in the kitchen. Rebecca was out shopping at the supermarket with Ace. I was alone in the apartment and was surprised by the arrival of Abigail, a middle-aged woman who looked fit at an age I knew was not young anymore. The woman was familiar, and I remembered Daniel's birthday party. She was Daniel's mother and Lucas' stepmother.
• "Oh, I know you, you're Daniel's friend, right?! What were you doing at Lucas' apartment?" The woman's question took me by surprise. I turned to look at Abigail, and I saw that she had no intention of telling me the truth.
• "She works as a maid here. Mom and Daniel gave her this job." Abigail replied, again surprising me and protesting with my gaze. I was about to clarify Abigail's untrue statement. Still, the two women passed me by and went straight into my apartment.
