- Like most old castle-style houses, Eve’s home had a tower with a steep spiral staircase and that distinct damp smell. Since it wouldn’t be wise to bring Chase upstairs, Lucas first asked Amelie to watch him while he and Eve went to the “beautiful prison”—as Eve called it, the place she lived after her father died and Berlina took over the house.
- Dust swirled along with the creak of hinges that made Lucas wince when Eve opened her bedroom door. Sunlight slipped through the gaps in the window. Eve paused for a moment, her hand still gripping the knob. Then she turned to Lucas.
- “Pretty, isn’t it?”
