• To avoid raising suspicion from Eve and the servants, Lucas and Neil moved at night, when everyone was already asleep. Before leaving the room, Lucas made sure Eve and Chase were fast asleep. He told Amelie to wake Eve if Chase cried, since that was what Eve wanted.
• “Tell Eve I have work to finish tonight, so I can’t stay with her,” Lucas instructed Amelie, and she nodded obediently.
• Neil was already in Gerald’s study, pulling books from the shelves. A stack of books he had apparently already checked wobbled near his feet. He looked up from one of them when Lucas entered.
