Chapter 35
- I pack our bags in the car when Nurse Edie stands on the front porch with the baby in her arms. I walk up to her and see the infant is sound asleep. “He’s beautiful,” I say to her. A pang of hurt shoots through me. Hurt for my mother who is no longer here and the betrayal of her memory that this baby would represent.
- “We received the paternity results back,” she says quietly. I just stare at the baby in anticipation “Meet your little brother,” my reaction is not what I expected. I feel nothing. No sadness or joy, nor hurt or happiness. Just numb. “What’s his name?” I ask her.
- “Your father wants to name him Andrew,”
