Chapter 29

  • The dining room is enormous, as are all the rest of the rooms I’ve seen so far. The room has two doors however. One that opens up into the corridor we enter in from and the other going out to a garden. Alex and I decide to grab our food and sit out there. The sky is blue and I watch the clouds move. Another video. I realize that it’s all a simulation to give the illusion that we’re not all confined to a space underground.
  • We sit on the grass by a large tree. The trees and the grass all seem real. I pick a blade of grass and realize that it is indeed real. The way Alex is sitting reminds me of how Benito sat next to me at my dads funeral. If I ever go back, I should apologize to him for being so rude. He was right, it wasn’t necessary to snap at him. He was only trying to be a comfort to me, probably because he knew that I had no friends. He was trying to be my friend I realize now.
  • “Everything ok?” Alex asks. “Yeah, just thinking of an old friend,” I smile at him. He takes my hand and laces his fingers with mine. “Think you’ll ever see your old friends again?” he asks
