Chapter 11

• The next morning I’m woken to Dad’s singing in the kitchen. The smell of garlic and bacon startles my senses and I’m dragged as if by cartoon smoke to the kitchen table. Dad chuckles, “I knew the smell of food would get you up.” He puts some scrambled eggs on my plate and I reach for 3 strips of bacon fried in garlic. “Where’s Heather?” I ask in-between gulps. Dad sits down across from me and dishes a plate for himself. “She said she’s going for a run.” Strange, I think. She’s never gone for a run since I’ve been here. My phone rings.
• “Hey, beautiful,” Ben says. “Want to go out?” I don’t have anything better to do today, I think.
• “Sure. Give me a few minutes to get ready.”
