• Charlotte walked down the hallway toward her cabin; accompanied by Dr. Carman, they casually discussed their recent surgery. He grinned, nudging her gently. “Remember your first time in the OR? You froze up right in the middle, and how could I forget your courage and speaking up in front of all the seniors? I have to say, Charlotte, that took guts,” Joseph chuckled, letting a playful laugh slip out.
• Charlotte smiled, her cheeks flushing in part embarrassment and pride. “You never let me forget that, do you?” she said, laughing along, the tension of the day momentarily eased.
• Just then, as they reached her cabin door, it opened unexpectedly, and Howard stepped out. He noticed Charlotte and Joseph laughing together, a sight that made his jaw tighten in irritation. He lingered silently, staring at them with a guarded intensity.
