• Howard’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing at the officer. “Did you catch him?” he demanded, his voice rising, raw and snarling. “The driver of the truck. Did you catch him? Or did he run? Did he leave him there to die and disappear like a coward?” His fists clenched at his sides, veins bulging along his forearms, his chest heaving with the effort to hold himself together.
• The officer shook his head slowly, his expression unreadable. “I’m sorry, sir. The investigation is ongoing. We’re examining the truck, the road, and the surveillance footage. We’ll know more soon, but right now, all we can do is piece it together.”
• “You’re doing everything you can,” Howard snapped, disbelief and anger twisting his voice. “Your doing everything didn’t stop that truck from hitting him. Your doing everything didn’t bring him back. Your doing everything didn’t stop him from bleeding out on the road. What good is your ‘doing everything’ when he’s lying here, dying?” His voice broke, his hands slamming against the wall beside him, the sound echoing through the room. “I want that bastard. I want his name. I want every detail. I want to know why he was driving like that. I want to know if he was drunk, if he was speeding, if he was distracted—anything. I want everything you have. I don’t care how long it takes. I don’t care how hard it is. I want answers!”
