• I slowly made my way toward Mr. Wendell's room, my heart racing with a mix of determination and anxiety. My parents were furious with me for rejecting the marriage proposal, and I had spent the entire night contemplating my decision. If I didn’t marry Howard, I realized I would miss my chance to take revenge on the Carter family.
