• In the stillness of the office, Elvis felt a jolt inside at Rebecca’s question. The words sank into him, annoying him with how much they unsettled his thoughts. Why should he even want to know about Edeline?
• He didn’t like that troublesome girl. He was certain she wasn’t a decent woman. He hated the way she had disrespected him, belittled his pride. Maybe it was just unstable emotions clouding his judgment last night, making him ask something so unnecessary. Yes—that had to be it. He wasn’t interested in Edeline. Not in the least.
• “You’re interested in her, aren’t you?” Rebecca pressed, repeating what he hadn’t answered. “This is surprising! You like Edeline—”
