• "Let me get this straight," the Alpha on the computer screen said slowly, his gaze fixed on me. "You're saying Stephen left the mountain some years ago, and is somehow responsible for your siblings' deaths?" Baxter, unlike most wolves I encountered – both on the mountain and elsewhere – kept his hair closely cropped, almost like a soldier. It was clear he took meticulous care of his appearance, shaving it down daily. His expression was skeptical, a flicker of doubt dancing in his eyes, but I could tell he was intrigued by my story.
• Baxter was Stephen's second-in-command, but I never fully trusted him. Paxton claimed Baxter had always aimed to overthrow Stephen, not out of loyalty or revenge, but simply to seize power. With Stephen now dead and Baxter as the new Alpha, it seemed his plan had succeeded.
