- My wolf, usually not confident, shivered at the mournful sound. Fear, cold and sharp, began to prickle my skin. I knew I had to take control, and quickly. My body began to change, muscles flexing and bones shifting. Everyone else instinctively stepped back, giving me the space I needed. Cyrus, however, seemed lost in his own fear and pain. For a moment, the strange, uncomfortable feeling of my body transforming seemed to distract him from his own distress.
- "Listen, we can't go this way," Cyrus said firmly. "Wolves come through this area, and they never come back. It's too dangerous.”
