- I regain consciousness in jerky starts. Horrific flashes of a child dangling from a high cliff, and then of the boy falling, and falling, and falling—then my eyes open fully. The muscle memory has me struggling for air after that. The moment passes and I relax again. I instinctively know I'm lying prone in a hospital bed.
- And I'm unable to move.
