• Betty’s eyelids flutter open, and for a moment, she looks disoriented, like she’s trying to remember where she is or how she got here. I’ve been sitting by her bedside for some time, waiting for those eyes to open. Her face looks puffy, her lips cracked, and her once-sparkling eyes are swollen almost shut. She looks so different from the radiant woman I met just yesterday. The transformation makes my stomach tumble on itself.
• Jimmy left not long ago. The king called him to the palace for something “urgent,” though I could tell he didn’t want to go. He’d been glued to the other chair all day, holding Betty’s hand, swallowing every time he looked at her.
