• “He’s not here,” I say, the truth of it making it easy for the words to slip out. “Come on, Alina. Let’s stop this thing we’re both doing, okay?”
• But Alina is already moving frantically into the house. Her steps echo across the small space as she tramped from the kitchen to the bedroom, then to the bathroom, pulling open doors, glancing under beds, checking corners that don’t need checking. Her hair has come loose from its perfect twist, and when she comes back to the living room, her breathing is ragged. She looks like she’s been running for miles.
