Chapter 1 Do You Want to Come With Me

  • At a police station in Wingston City, the young policewoman looked sympathetically at Erin Harvey, who kept fiddling with her fingers while sitting on the chair, and asked, “It’s been five days, Captain. We’ve called all of Erin’s relatives, but none of them is willing to adopt her. What do you think we should do now?”
  • “What else can we do? Send her to the orphanage then.” Captain Wilkins crouched in front of Erin. “Erin, I’ll send you to the orphanage tomorrow, alright?”
  • Erin gently pressed her thin lips together, her long eyelashes drooping as though she didn’t hear what he said at all.
  • Captain Wilkins gave a long sigh. “Why do you think no one is willing to take in such an adorable child—”
  • Before he could finish his sentence, he heard a clatter of heavy footsteps approaching from the police station’s door. Startled, he stood up and looked at the door.
  • “Here, Young Master Arthur.”
  • Captain Wilkins first saw the person who spoke, and his jaw dropped in shock at the sight of the man. What kind of a terrific figure is this? Our Chief even greeted him in person!
  • Then, an emotionless gaze that seemed to contain a sharpness that could destroy everything shifted to Captain Wilkins, causing the latter’s heart to jump. When he looked in the direction of the gaze, he immediately let out a gasp.
  • The man heading his way was tall and lean. Dressed in light-colored casual wear, he put his hands in his pockets while pressing his clean, thin lips into a straight line. His face—the features of which were so pronounced as if God carved them himself—had an inherent coolness about it and the aristocratic vibes he gave off made people avoid his gaze.
  • Captain Wilkins recognized this man at a glance. He was Arthur Harrison, the most esteemed third young master of the Harrison Family—the leading family of the Four Greatest Families of Wingston City—whom Old Mr. Harrison had publicly announced to be the future heir to the Harrison Group.
  • But what is he doing here? thought Captain Wilkins to himself.
  • Noticing that Arthur was coming his way, Captain Wilkins quickly stepped aside.
  • Arthur walked straight up to Erin before drawing his hand out of his trouser pocket. Then, he put out a long, thin finger and gently lifted Erin’s little chin, staring expressionlessly at her exquisite doll-like face with cold, deep eyes. “Do you want to come with me?”
  • Captain Wilkins was speechless.
  • Erin hadn’t spoken a word for five days since the car accident. She stared at Arthur; her eyes were as dark as two gemstones that hadn’t been tainted by worldliness.
  • Arthur frowned. “You’re not willing?”
  • Erin lowered her excessively long eyelashes without saying a word. Then, she slowly raised her hand and gently held the slightly icy finger that Arthur put on her chin.
  • Arthur narrowed his eyes before his long arm stretched out and hooked around Erin’s dainty body. Tucking her under his arm, he then strode out of the police station.
  • Stupefied, Captain Wilkins looked at the chief, who shook his head at him with a frown before immediately going out after Arthur. “Young Master Arthur…” However, Arthur had already gotten into his car with Erin tucked under his arm when the chief came out after him.
  • Marvin Patterson stepped in front of the chief before the latter got near the car. “Chief, Young Master Arthur has decided to adopt this girl. I’ll be handling the procedures and formalities required for the adoption.”
  • The chief still wanted to say something, but Arthur’s car had sped off like a rocket.
  • Instead of taking Erin back to the Harrison Residence, Arthur took her directly to the villa where he lived by himself. He disliked being disturbed, so no housekeepers were hired in this villa. The Harrison Residence would send people over every once in a while to clean the villa, but they wouldn’t stay long and would leave right after they finished cleaning.
  • Erin was tucked under Arthur’s arm all the way. His arm was stiff, making her waist and belly hurt, but she didn’t make a sound.
  • Arthur put her down after stepping into the living room. Not paying attention to her anymore, he sat down on the sofa and lightly pinched his tall nose bridge twice with his fingers.
  • Erin stood in the living room; her hands were clenched into fists at her sides as she stared at Arthur with her pure and lustrous black eyes. The little girl showed no sign of fear or discomfort despite the unfamiliar surroundings.
  • “Are you very tired?” This was the first sentence Erin said to anyone in five days; her voice was soft but husky.
  • Arthur paused for a moment. Then, he put down his hand and gazed coldly at Erin.
  • Erin slowly walked up to him before standing in front of him. “I’m Erin Harvey. Who are you?”
  • As Arthur stared at her, something flashed across his cold eyes so fast that one couldn’t catch it. Seeing that he didn’t speak, Erin slightly pursed her pink and tender lips.
  • “I’m Arthur Harrison.” This was the first time Arthur introduced himself like this to someone, and his handsome brows slightly furrowed as if he hadn’t gotten used to it.
  • Erin opened her mouth as if mumbling his name silently. After a long while, she asked, “Then, what should I call you?”
  • “Well, I’m the third child of my family,” Arthur answered.
  • Erin tilted her head to one side while staring inquiringly at Arthur with her big eyes. She whispered, “May I call you Uncle Arthur?”
  • Arthur looked into her big eyes, which were as lustrous and clear as obsidians. After a long time, he replied, “Up to you.”
  • Erin suddenly curved her lips into a smile. She greeted sweetly, “Uncle Arthur.”
  • Arthur’s pupils shrank slightly. After staring at her for a long time, he responded in a whisper, “Uh-huh.”
  • It was at this moment—when Erin called him Uncle Arthur in a soft and sweet voice—that Arthur would be forever destined to be part of her life.
