• It was customary for my son and me to have dinner at Mom's at least once a week. Lucas was always super excited to visit his grandma, even though she lived just three streets down from us. I laughed when he eagerly pulled out his chair, ready to take his place at the table.
• Mom's house, though minimalist, had a warm vibe that made you feel welcome. The lavender scent and Lucas's pictures on every available surface in the house added to its charm. Mom put on her favorite song, "When Your Day Comes," and brought the food out, dressed in a casual kimono. Chef Austin was in the kitchen, working his magic.
