• Ash and Jett did not return early the day before, and by nightfall everyone assumed they had found something important. That belief should have calmed me, but it did not. I went to bed beside Orion with a tight feeling deep inside my chest. Something felt wrong. No one said anything, yet the silence felt heavy.
• Orion held me close, firm and warm, pressing soft kisses to my forehead now and then. Each time I noticed, I forced my eyes shut, trying to fall asleep faster.
