• I made my way back from the coconut stand, two chilled coconuts in my hands. Sophie had been sitting by the water’s edge, her smile radiant, her laugh infectious. I’d spent most of the day just soaking it in, marveling at how she could look so effortlessly beautiful even while barefoot and carefree.
• But as I got closer, my steps faltered. There was someone with her. A guy. He stood casually, tall and broad, with an easy smile that grated on my nerves the longer I watched. He was leaning just a little too close, talking to her like he’d known her forever. And Sophie? She was smiling at whatever he was saying.
