• As the car came to a stop at the entrance of the mansion, I could feel the unease swirling in my stomach. Sophie didn’t say a word. She simply opened the door and walked out, heading up the left staircase to check on Alex.
• I turned to go up the right side, retreating to my room. My heart was beating fast, like a drum in my chest. I knew I’d done something terrible. Many weeks back, I’d put Sophie in a position where she didn’t have any other choice but to accept me. She didn’t deserve that. She deserved the truth—she deserved better than me.
• I slammed the door behind me, trying to steady my breathing. The phone call... What the hell was that all about? Someone knew. Someone was threatening to expose me. I couldn’t let that happen.
