Chapter 26

• I dragged my feet up the stairs, heading up to Alex’s room, while feeling the weight of the decision ahead of me. I had spent the whole of yesterday with Mami and yet I couldn’t summon the courage to tell her. Even when she asked about the conditions of her release from the kidnappers den, I asked her not to worry about it.
• I didn’t forget to also mention how Danny had been concerned for her, even though she didn’t believe me. Maybe she had not failed entirely at raising her son like she thought, and I felt glad to know that.
• My thoughts were interrupted as I knocked and pushed Alex’s room’s door open, only to meet Ethan sitting on the bed with his hands folded. The smile I was never wearing disappeared from my face as it grew cold.
