- The next morning, I waited by the kitchen, arms crossed, watching the clock tick past eight. She’d always been an early riser, but not today. It just seemed like she knew I was waiting and she was determined to make me wait. Finally, the sound of her footsteps echoed down the hallway.
- Sophie appeared, with her hair carefully pinned back. I cleared my throat as she entered, pretending I hadn’t been standing there like an idiot for fifteen minutes.
- “Morning,” she said, brushing past me to grab a coffee mug.
