Chapter 8

  • Fighting the rogue wasn't as easy but I was able to defend myself more than he thought. I couldn't continue fighting him knowing Kelvin was losing so much blood and I needed to take him away from there so as to be treated.
  • With a huge strength in me I pulled my pawns out, groaning loudly. I rushed towards him, piercing my pawns into him as he howled in pain. Slowly I pulled my pawns out seeing him fall slowly I rushed to where Kelvin was and carried him away from there, he was too heavy but I managed.
  • On getting the house I quickly sent for the pack doctor who arrived early, and gave him some treatment before she left with an assurance to come back to see how he was healing.
  • Deep down I was praying for divine healing. A few moments after Kelvin's eyes met mine, I knew something was wrong from the way he glanced at me. His wounds from the fight with the rogue were deeper than I thought, this made my heart race as I prayed silently for him to heal. He was strong enough to survive this, but even he had limits.
  • I stepped up to say, "You need to relax," but he stopped me with a dead smile.
  • He said, "I am OK," as he attempted to rise up but became unsteady on his feet. I took hold of his arm and helped him sit on the bed before he might collapse.
  • It was quiet in the Tavern, yet the air was thick. I was troubled by the rogue's remarks for some reason. The Crimson Moon Pack is working with someone within the Tavern. I did not know who it may be, but we were in greater danger than we realized if that traitor was around and observing us.
  • I cleaned Kelvin’s wounds in silence. He winced slightly but didn’t complain, he was enduring it. I could feel the strain in his muscles and the warmth of his body. I tried not to think about how close we were, but my heart had other ideas.
  • I quietly said, "You fought well," interrupting the quiet.
  • His red eyes locked onto mine. "You did too."
  • I knew better than to believe him, but I wanted to. I was still weak. If he hadn’t stepped in, I would’ve been dead.
  • "Rest," I said, standing up. "I'll check on the others."
  • Kelvin grabbed my wrist before I could leave. "Be careful. If someone is a traitor, they may target you next.”
  • A chill raced down my spine and pulled nerves into me. He was right. If someone wanted me dead, I had to be ready.
  • I noticed a change in the Tavern after leaving Kelvin's room. The normal chatter was replaced by an eerie silence. I had a feeling that something was not right.
  • Then I saw someone, it was the….. yes the nurse who had taken care of Kelvin along with the pack doctor was standing near the entrance, her face pale from the observation
  • "What’s wrong?" was the question I had to ask her since I was curious.
  • "Logan is missing," she whispered to me, I felt a shiver run down my spine at the mention of that, how is that possible?
  • Logan was one of Kelvin’s strongest warriors. He never left his post without a reason and his reasons are tangible. If he was missing, something bad would have happened while Kelvin and I were attacked by the rogue.
  • "How long has he been gone?" I asked her, wanting to make sure the time tallied with the time we had that fight.
  • "Since the fight with the rogue. No one has seen him since." She mentioned
  • Dread settled in my chest. If Logan was gone, then the enemy was moving faster than we thought and it seems we are dying here.
  • I was so determined to find answers about everything which was suddenly happening, I moved through the Tavern making sure I wasn't creating any footsteps noise, listening closely to every sound I heard and ones I wanted to head from afar it was hushed… That’s when I heard voices sound so urgent, whispers coming from behind one of the storage rooms.
  • I crept closer, pressing my back against the wall silently as my heart skipped.
  • "She’s still alive," a deep voice said.
  • A second voice replied, "We need to act fast. If Kelvin finds out, we’re dead."
  • My breath caught. Someone inside was working with the enemy and I wasn't so good at recording the voice. My heart pounded as I peeked through a crack in the door to know if I could see the face as I couldn't tell whose voice was that.
  • The sight of what I saw left my jaw dropped as I was left to doubt, it was Liam! One of Kelvin’s trusted men in the guards.
  • Betrayal burned in my chest as I watched him from the window. He was supposed to protect the Tavern, protect us. Instead, he was selling us out. Why will he do that to Kelvin after everything Kelvin had done for him.
  • I had to tell Kelvin. But before I could move, a hand clamped over my mouth.
  • I struggled to free myself from the grip, kicking and clawing, but my attacker was too strong for me. At least to see the face of my attacker. He dragged me backward, into the shadows as I kept trying but I was no match to him.
  • "Stay quiet," Liam’s voice hissed in my ear.
  • I bit his hand, hard as we are above to get inside the room. He cursed and let go for a second, but it was enough. I spun around and elbowed him in the ribs. He stumbled, but before I could run, another set of arms grabbed me.
  • "Not so fast," a familiar voice sneered with laughter in his voice.
  • I froze. Kelly.
  • She was here. In the Tavern.
  • Her cold blue eyes met mine, fille
  • d with amusement. "Miss me?"
  • Before I could scream, darkness took over.
