• She's casually leaning against the door looking down at her fingernails. I notice the small knife she's holding and know this isn't going to end well. How long has she been standing there? Did she hear everything I said? Crap, sometimes Marianna can be unhinged. If I'm not careful, I could find myself with that knife lodged between my eyes. I need something to defend myself with.
• "Whatever you're thinking about doing, don't," she says pretending to be fascinated with her nails but I know she's watching my every move.
• "I did everything because Padre asked me to" I defend myself taking another step toward my bed. There's a knife under my pillow. If I can get to it, we'll be even.
