Chapter 20 Remorseful
- TWO MONTHS LATER
- “The game is about to begin,” my father said, but he paused when he noticed how I jumped. “Are you okay?” he asked, and I turned around to face him, confirming that I was, even though I wasn’t. It had been two months since Rayne’s house burned down, and it had been an emotional rollercoaster. Every night, I awoke to her crying. Last night was the worst; she did not fall asleep until the early hours of the morning, and I was awake all night. I did not mind staying up all night; that was not the most difficult part. The most difficult part was my inability to do anything to alleviate her pain. I felt hopeless, and I hated myself, especially knowing that the fact that she didn't trust me made things worse.
- Every night, I got up and sat next to her, but Rayne would not let me get close. Only two days ago, she allowed me to console her. I held her all night, but last night, she refused again to let me get close to her.
