Chapter 13 Alone At Night

  • Closing the book, Ann placed it back on the shelf and walked out of the library. She needed air; the atmosphere inside felt suffocating. She made her way to the balcony and took a deep breath of fresh air, which helped calm her nerves.
  • Her palms were sweating, so she wiped them on her jeans, fixed her hair, and walked back into the building. It was a few minutes past seven, and it was time for dinner. Ann ate in silence, with Darius stealing glances at her from time to time. Ann knew he wanted to say something but couldn’t or didn’t think it was the right time. She was thankful for his silence; she didn’t have the strength to argue with him.
  • The queen had traveled for an important meeting, so it was just Darius and Ann having dinner by themselves. After she finished eating, she made her way to her room to rest for the night but met Sarah tidying up her room.
