Colin came out of the bathroom and looked around. Splashing cold water on his face hadn’t helped. He looked over at Whiskers. She sat perfectly still looking in the kitchen. The amber eyes turned to look at him before she got up and came over to him. Using her large powerful shoulders, she began pushing at the backs of his legs and herding him to the kitchen. He shuffled in the direction the animal was directing while looking down at her. That’s just what he needed right now, a bossy feline with really large teeth. He was trying to figure how to chastise her without losing a hand when he heard the sniffling coming from the kitchen. He looked back down at the cat and was sure her expression was telling him to go fix things. Shaking his head he stepped into the kitchen.
Maddy’s back was facing him as she stood leaning over the counter with her face in her hands. Her shoulders shook from the quiet sobs. Walking over he placed a gentle hand on her back. “Hey,” he said softly.
She straightened up, but didn’t turn. “Sorry, I didn’t hear you come in,” Maddy wiped her hands quickly over her face.
Colin sighed and cursed his male weakness for a woman’s tears. He placed a hand on her arm and turned her gently. Her turquoise eyes were filled with more unshed tears, and his heart thudded painfully in his chest. He offered her a small smile, “it’s going to work out.” He pulled her slowly towards him and wrapped his arms around her. She grasped his shirt and rested her head on his shoulder. He ran a soothing hand down her back. “There are enough people working on this, there is no way we won’t figure it out.” He attempted to soothe her, not even sure he believed it himself
It had been so long since Maddy had been held by anyone, she’d forgotten the feeling of security that came over you when you were in someone’s arms. “I hope so,” she whispered, “I really hope so. I don’t think I can live with two curses for the rest of my life.”
Colin reached up and cupped her face in his large hands. “Hey, I’m relentless when it comes to research, I don’t give up.” He smiled at her and tried not to feel like he was falling into her eyes. She looked down at her hands grasping his shirt and nodded. He released her face and let his hands rest on her shoulders. “Okay, if I’m staying at this secluded vacation spot for a few days, I need to go to my place and get some stuff.” He cocked his head to the side, “so, I guess means you’re coming with me.”
