Chapter 20 Moving In

  • I waited on the porch for the pizza to arrive. It came quickly and I carried the three boxes into the house. I had ordered one half cheese and peperoni, while the other was half supreme and half meat lovers. I also ordered garlic knots and cheesy bread. The boxes barely weighing me down, I stepped into the light of the living room. Kay sat watching TV on the sofa as I struggled to close the door behind me. She laughed loudly at the show I was putting on and hurriedly came over to help me. I slid the boxes into my left hand as she stopped in front of me and leaned into me to shut the door. The smell of vanilla and marinara sauce filled my nostrils as she looked up into my eyes. I could feel the electricity between us.
  • “Sorry.” She cleared her throat as she straightened away from me. If I hadn’t been holding the pizzas I would have stolen a kiss. She had been close enough that I felt her breath fan across the hairs on my arm.
  • “You’re good.” I responded to her retreating back. It didn’t matter what I said at this point. Seeing Peyotn had brought up all the walls I had worked weeks to bring down. This deal we had struck with him weighed heavily on my mind and I found myself setting the pizzas on the table as I wondered what would have happened if we had rejected him completely. Maybe Kay would’ve been able to be mine fully, maybe we should have chosen a different path. Kay stood before the boxes licking her lips, hunger in her eyes. I popped open one box after the next and stepped aside allowing her to feast her eyes on the spread in front of her. For a moment I thought I saw drool drip from her lips, and she dove in. Ripping slice from slice and pilling them high on her plate.
