• I walked alongside Annie, who looked surprised that I wasn’t skipping combat class today. For this class, we had to stash our stuff in the school lockers. Showing up at the training zone with unnecessary items or any kind of electronics was strictly off-limits. We stopped at a wide clearing behind the school, right at the start of a trail that led into the forest.
• “Well, look who decided to show up today!” Lorraine sneered as soon as she saw me. Took her long enough to come bother me—I was starting to think she’d forgotten I existed. “Try not to screw up my boyfriend’s class again.”
• “Isn’t she that human? What’s she doing here?” I heard one girl whisper to another a few feet away. They were third-years from another class.
