• Hm? Why was Nathan texting me? Is this some sort of prank? Where would he even get my number? This had to be some sort of prank; there was no way a guy who disappeared for weeks after the way I acted would suddenly come back and text me, of all things?! This had to be a prank, I thought, shaking my head. But somehow, there was a small fuzzy feeling at the risk of eruption—my stomach felt like it had a whole bottle of butterflies.
• I stared at my phone for a while, trying to decide if I should answer him or not. After only a minute of contemplating—though it felt like ages to me—I decided to answer him just to see if this was a prank or not. I was really curious, and the girly side of me hoped that it would really be him. I mean, I wouldn’t lose anything from just testing the waters, now would I? If it was him, then great; if not, well, my rational brain would have been right, and I’d have made a fool of myself.
• Taking a deep breath, I got so immersed in my reply. What should I say? How do I write the text? I suddenly felt like I didn’t even know how to formulate a sentence as I typed in my reply. I kept deleting and then rewriting the same response. I wasn’t sure if it was good enough.
