• I stammered a little, feeling the heat rising in my cheeks. “I-uh- My name is Mia,” I managed, giving a small, awkward wave. The darkened interior of the car made me doubt anyone could even see it, since only our faces were dimly illuminated while the rest of us were swallowed by the shadows.
• “Oh, I almost missed you there! Why are you sitting so close to the door?” Selena asked, smiling.
• “So, tell us,” Candice chimed in, still checking her makeup in a compact mirror, “which one did you pick? Did you go for the infamous party animal Carlos, like Selena here, or did you go for someone more exotic—like Mr. Nathan, the hottest ‘it’ boy of the academy who, rumor has it, hasn’t even slept with anyone on his bang list?”
