• "How is she?" I asked as soon as I had a moment to breathe. Urgent pack matters had kept me away, and it had been days since I last saw her—days of barely holding back the pull that constantly urged me to go to her.

• "That’s good." A sigh of relief escaped me, knowing she was back on her feet. Mia’s resilience—it always took me by surprise, even when I knew what she was capable of. Despite everything she’d been through, she was standing strong. Her strength made me proud, and somehow, it reminded me of the girl I’d fought at the hotel. The memory was hazy, but something gnawed at me every time I thought of her—the feeling that this girl was familiar, like I’d known her before.
