Chapter 39

• With my eyes closed, I try to focus on that memory again to remember what happened the night my parents died. Since seeing Cole again, the dream about that night keeps reoccurring. Yet, I can’t remember much, only waking up to the smell of smoke. So I invited Cole over to see if he could help jog my memory since he was the catalyst. I haven’t quite forgiven him for that night and how he left, but I understand his reasons. I inhale, trying to remember what happened after I woke. I know I tried looking for my parents, but what else happened? How did I make it out when my parents did not? What happened that night? Five minutes pass, and still nothing. I frown and open my eyes.
• “This isn’t working. I announce out loud,” We’ve been at trying for hours, but I haven’t been able to recall anything new.
