• Sitting on the edge of the bed, I watched Emma build towers with her toy blocks. She was humming quietly to herself, her tiny hands moving with careful concentration. I tried to focus on her, to be present, but my mind was elsewhere, drifting back to Ruby. That damn message. The way her hands shook. The way she bolted out of the house without a word. It was tearing me apart that I couldn’t follow her, couldn’t be there to handle whatever the hell was going on.
