• I leaned back in my chair, staring at the piles of files scattered across my desk, but I wasn’t really seeing them. My mind kept drifting back to this morning—back to Ruby. Her words still echoed in my head, sharp and dismissive, digging deep into a place I didn’t like to admit existed. I was supposed to be working, supposed to focus on anything but her, yet there I was, drowning in thoughts of her.
