Chapter 8 The Time Had Come

  • Fortunately, many doctors knew Bobby because he had been hospitalized for a long time. Hence, the doctors allowed us to stay in the hospital. I did not dare to hide the fact that Bobby was brought to a holistic doctor. So I immediately talked to the doctor about it.
  • Without further ado, the doctor examined Bobby.
  • After the examination, the doctor came to me. He lectured me by saying, "The holistic doctor is not a professional. His treatment of Bobby wasn't correct. The tools used were prone to infection if they were not sanitized properly. I have to give Bobby an injection as a precaution."
  • My eyes hardened and narrowed into slits as I listened to the doctor's words.
  • I called my mother-in-law right on the spot. She did not care about what I said at first. She was only afraid after knowing the consequences of her actions.
  • However, it was too late for her to amend the situation because she had given the rest of the medical expenses to the holistic doctor.
  • My mother-in-law was restless. She blurted out before knowing it, "If the two of you had planned to conceive another child, there wouldn't be so much trouble. I couldn't bear to look at Bobby getting chemotherapy anymore. That's why I thought of trying this method."
  • Conceiving another child? I want that more than anyone else. Fortunately, I finally have the chance to be pregnant now. I stroked my tummy gently, praying everything would go accordingly this time.
  • In the afternoon, Jeremy brought ten thousand dollars to pay for the hospitalization fees. The amount was far from enough, but at least he managed to pay for part of the expenses.
  • I took the money from Jeremy, and I stared at him with mixed feelings. After a long time, I finally managed to thank him for the money.
  • "My mother had made a mistake this time. But she had good intentions. It's all for Bobby's sake. I hope you will never mention this matter again in the future." Jeremy looked at me coldly, and he said it expressionlessly.
  • I knew what Jeremy's intentions were. He hoped for me to stop and for the matter to die down.
  • To maintain the illusion of our happy family, I nodded in agreement with him. At the same time, I asked, "Your mother wants us to conceive another child to save Bobby. What do you think?"
  • Jeremy recoiled in disgust after hearing what I said. His eyes turned cold, and he snarled at me, "Firstly, I will never get intimate with you. Secondly, are you sure Bobby can be saved by using my child?"
  • He was answering my question with sarcasm, and he sneered as he talked.
  • "I was able to give birth to Bobby. So I will be able to conceive one more time." I met his gaze and said sternly.
  • "What do you mean?" Jeremy was flabbergasted.
  • Then, he glowered at me. "What do you mean? You already made me raise someone else's illegitimate child once. Now I have to raise two?" His voice was halfway between a whisper and a shout when he said it to me.
  • "No, they aren't illegitimate children. Jeremy, we're not actually married. We're only two people working together in the name of it."
  • He was furious. "I don't care about how many men you've slept with, but if you ever affect my reputation because of it, you'll have to pay the price. Samantha, you better behave yourself when you're out." He threatened me under his breath.
  • "Jeremy, you can always divorce me. I'm determined to save Bobby. Anyway, please be ready for it."
  • With that, I turned around without looking at him. I immediately entered the ward.
  • Bobby saw me returning from the outside of the ward. He kept on looking and checking behind me, hoping Jeremy would be entering the ward. He was disappointed when he did not see Jeremy.
  • I knew he longed for Jeremy's companion. He wished Jeremy was like every other normal father. However, all of these wishes would not be granted.
  • I was pained to see him like this. To lighten the mood, I took out a storybook to tell him a story.
  • "Once upon a time, there was a little girl selling matches on..."
  • Bobby was paying attention to the storyline. He was blinking and nodding attentively as I told the tale. His eyelashes were awfully long and dark. In fact, parts of Bobby's appearance resembled me, and parts of it resembled Henry.
  • But, altogether, he did not look quite like the both of us.
  • When I finished telling the story, Bobby turned and looked at me. He said sincerely, "Mommy, can you and Daddy please give birth to a little brother? So, the two of you won't be lonely when I'm gone."
  • The next thing I knew, I had tears streaming down my face.
  • "Bobby, don't talk nonsense."
  • He was only three years old. I did not expect him to talk about death in a calm manner.
  • I knew he had already understood the definition of death. He knew that the child that played with him the other day would never come back.
  • I had never felt more heartbroken than I felt at this moment.
  • I could only hope. I hoped that I could be pregnant successfully this time so that I could save Bobby's life.
  • It was always so difficult to wait for the results. I bought a bunch of pregnancy test kits, and I carried out the tests in the bathroom every day.
  • After waiting for fifteen days, I got two lines on my pregnancy test. I was laughing like a lunatic in the bathroom of the hospital.
