Chapter 6 Are You Going To Reject Me?

  • [Dorothy]
  • I was perplexed by Brohan’s sudden outburst. How could he have this adverse reaction to just a mere meeting? Doesn’t he want my help to run the pack someday? Why did he introduce me to the pack as their future Luna, then? Is he planning to reject me anytime soon?
  • As the string of questions popped into my mind, I felt that something was off. Was I mistaken? Was it me he disapproved of, or was it his own mother he didn’t want to be close to me? But why?
  • My thoughts were interrupted by my mate’s harsh words. “If you want to stay in this pack, learn how to listen to what I say. I am your mate, and after I take over, you will be my Luna. You have nothing to do with that woman, so stay away from her. Am I clear?” He blurted, and my hands trembled under the table as I held onto the hem of my dress, as if making a fist out of it could save me from Brohan’s wrath
  • That woman.
  • Why would he address his mother as ‘that woman’?
  • Now, I suspect this mother-and-son duo is not getting along so well. Of course, there were rumors, but I never really paid attention to them before.
  • I looked into Brohan’s eyes as I forced all my emotions buried under an unreadable expression.
  • “Are you going to reject me?” The words came out of my mouth faster than I would want to. And for a moment, I regret asking the question. A gentle hand settled on my shoulder as soon as the last word escaped my mouth. I traced its owner and saw Nanny Adel’s restless gaze on me. Anxiety was written all over her face. I put my hand on top of her to console her; there was no going back after that question fled. If Brohan really had plans of rejecting me, then it’s beneficial for River and me so that we can move on from this mate bond, right?
  • My gaze traveled back to the man in front of me. He was still bent forward as if stuck in that position for eternity, and his anger was more intense this time. I looked at him listlessly as I patiently waited for his response.
  • He opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, a thunderous male voice sounded from behind. “What’s going on here?” My eyes instinctively searched for its origin, and I saw Alpha Mateo approaching. I got up from my chair and bowed my head slightly to acknowledge his presence, “Alpha.”
  • He stopped just a few feet away from our table, his gaze bouncing between Brohan and me. I also noticed that Brohan relaxed his jaw muscles and was now showing indifference. Alpha Mateo pointed his finger at Brohan, then me, “Come with me in my office.” His voice was firm and final, leaving no room for negotiations.
  • I looked at Nanny Adel in panic, but she just tapped my shoulder blades gently with an encouraging look in her eyes before pushing me to do as the Alpha instructed, and I nodded without saying a word. Before I marched toward the Alpha’s office, Nanny Adel whispered into my ears, “I will inform Luna that you cannot make it. Don’t worry.” A sigh of relief finally came off of my chest. I don’t want to disrespect Luna Amelia for not showing up on the agreed schedule. I silently thanked Nanny for saving my face this time.
  • We silently sat in front of Alpha Mateo’s table. My head hung low as I wriggled the hem of my shirt while Brohan sat on the opposite chair with his arms folded across his chest, legs stretched forward, giving me a death glare.
  • “Who wants to start?” Alpha broke the uncomfortable silence in the room. “Dorothy, do you want to tell me what was going on a while ago?” Alpha Mateo asked, his voice void of emotion but softer than I anticipated.
  • I raised my head to look at Brohan, then at Alpha. “Ah… uhm… I came to visit Luna Amelia yesterday, and we agreed to meet again today for Luna training, but…..” I stuttered initially and dragged the remaining words as I glanced back at Brohan. This time, his gaze was directed at his foot, and he looks unenthusiastic about talking, so I continued. “Brohan told me not to go, Alpha,” I paused for a while; I didn’t know if he would take my next words against me or not, but I would rather bear the consequence than walk on eggshells in the coming days.
  • “Forgive me, Alpha. I know it was impulsive for me to ask Brohan such a question, but I think if he doesn’t want me to learn the Luna duties, he may have a plan of rejecting me, so I asked him, just that…… if he planned on rejecting me……” my statement was hanging as if I intend to say more. Yet, in reality, I want one of them to pick up where I stopped to confirm or deny my suspicion.
  • After a few seconds of silence, Alpha Mateo scoffed before fixing his gaze on me, “Dorothy, you can go to Amelia starting tomorrow and try to learn as fast as possible. I don’t want any delays. At the time of your Luna ceremony, you must be well prepared to take over all her duties and relieve Amelia of all her responsibilities, clear?” he puffed his chest a couple of times before throwing a disappointed glare at Brohan.
  • “I heard that you get a lot of disturbance in your room, so I will tell Adel to transfer all your belongings to the fourth floor. Starting today, you will use the exclusive alpha floor elevator and stay in Luna’s chamber. Don’t worry about rejection; you and Brohan are fated mates, so there will be no rejection,” he added before getting up from his chair and guiding me out of his office. “You can go back to your room or ask one of the omegas to give you a tour around the pack, okay?” he tapped the crown of my head before opening the door. I nodded and exited quietly, wondering who had told him about the disturbance in my room, but I didn’t dwell much on it. After all, it was not the kind of disturbance that could be solved by moving me to another room. As long as Brohan and I were tied to this stupid mate bond, I would always suffer from his son’s betrayal. And how could Alpha Mateo not know about this? Hmm, hypocrisy.
  • So, no rejection. It should have put my heart at ease by now, but it didn’t. Those words did not come from Brohan but from his father. He can still reject me if he wants to.
  • Rejection.
  • The word played like a broken record in my mind as I steered the empty hallway absentmindedly. I wouldn’t lie; rejection gives me a glimmer of hope.
  • As I approached the bottom of the stairs, my head was abruptly pulled backward, and a burning sensation instantly hit my scalp. I tried to look behind, but everything happened so fast. By the time I understood what was happening, my body had already hit the floor with a thud. The sudden impact caused my head to hit the hard surface, and I’m sure a lump will be formed at the back of my head and perhaps some bruising on my back.
  • Taken aback, I don’t know where to focus: the pain in my back, my head, or the fact that I was lying on the floor surrounded by five she-wolves looking down on me as if I were a piece of dirt they could crush under their shoes.
  • I turned to my side, gearing up to push my weight up from the ground, when something sharp hit the back of my head. My vision became blurry, and darkness slowly engulfed me. I tried to keep my eyes from closing, but my eyelids were unresponsive. Faint laughter and hushed chatters registered in my ears as I drifted deeper into the darkness until there was nothing.
  • Everything was dark and quiet………..
