• Darren sat hunched forward on the plastic bench outside the ward, elbows resting on his knees, hands tangled together so tightly his knuckles were bone white. Bryan sat beside him in silence, legs stretched out, the faint glow of a cigarette smoldering between his fingers but never reaching his lips.
