Chapter 9 What Is 'That'?

  • NeoEast International was located far away from the university Charlotte went to, and to make it easy for her to go to work, she rented a two-bedroom apartment near the company with someone else.
  • Aiden, on the other hand, lived alone in their family residence.
  • When Saturday came, Darius picked Charlotte up at her apartment complex at 10.00AM.
  • Charlotte did as Darius requested, dressing decently in a white t-shirt, a red skirt, and a pair of white skater shoes, looking youthful and lively. She was young, so she looked good no matter how she dressed.
  • Darius had a chauffeur drive this time while he sat at the back with Charlotte, and when she entered the car, he only took a perfunctory and silent gander at her.
  • It wasn't until they came to the highway that a thought hit Charlotte—did her contracted marriage with Darius include doing the deed?
  • Alas, she was so desperate for money that she had signed the contract just like that. How could she not have clarified this with him before signing it?
  • They would soon arrive at his grandfather's home, and since they were putting on a show for the old man, they would definitely sleep in the same room. However, would he demand doing it?
  • At the thought of that, a jolt of electricity shot through her brain.
  • She didn't know if the chauffeur knew about her contracted marriage with Darius, so she texted Darius for fear that the chauffeur would hear her. 'President, does our contract include doing that?'
  • After hearing a ping, Darius took his sweet time picking up his phone and flipping to his WhatsApp.
  • Meanwhile, Charlotte sat still and upright. From the corner of her eyes, she could tell Darius was replying super inattentively to the message, and she couldn't help clenching her phone.
  • Very quickly, a notification appeared on her screen. '1 contact sent 1 message to you'.
  • With that, she unlocked her phone and flipped to her chat record with 'Rando'.
  • 'What's 'that'?'
  • Charlotte thought her head was going to explode. It was such a pressing matter, yet he was playing dumb with her!
  • Did he really not know what 'that' was, or was he just pretending not to?!
  • 'That.'
  • Moments later, her phone sounded again, and she hurriedly checked it.
  • 'What do you think?'
  • Charlotte wanted to flip when she read his reply, speechless.
  • But while she was mindlessly hovering her thumbs over the keypad, unsure of how to reply, Darius' voice came from the side. "Am I 'Rando'?"
  • The sudden voice caused Charlotte to jolt in surprise, not expecting the question from him. Reflexively, she looked toward him only to find his eyelids slightly closed and his head lowered. He was looking at her phone as it displayed her chat history with 'Rando'.
  • "Pardon?" It took her a second to process what he had just asked, and she hurriedly explained, "It's just a codename. I thought people might figure it out, and our relationship would be exposed if I put 'President Leynthall'."
  • In other words, Charlotte was implying that she hadn't announced their relationship to anyone else, and she was being super secretive about it.
  • At that, Darius looked back out the window, not wanting to waste his time talking to her.
  • How can this guy be so perfunctory? Can't he give a straight answer? she thought.
  • Since he wouldn't answer her question in writing, she'd just ask verbally. She didn't care whether the chauffeur knew anymore.
  • "Did you bring protection, President Leynthall?" Charlotte went straight to the point as she questioned him soberly.
  • She couldn't get pregnant. She still had to take the CPA exam, become a boss lady, and earn money. She couldn't have a child dragging her down.
  • Darius turned his head around in response and sized her up with a slight frown as though saying, 'You're a girl. Do you have no modesty?'
  • "No," he answered plainly before turning his gaze back out the window.
  • Charlotte gulped, feeling nervous.
  • However, a different thought popped into her head. Perhaps he didn't bring protection because he has no intention of doing it. He's probably still regretting our one-night stand, but he can't do anything about it, thinking an intern like me has dragged him down. He's so sober now; there's no way he'll fall for the same trick again. Besides, he's the CEO of NeoEast International! How can he allow a measly intern to bear his child?
  • As the thought crossed her mind, she heaved a sigh of relief.
