Chapter 8 Do You Need It Urgently?

  • Charlotte was like a cat on a hot tin roof, for Dr. Frost said her mother's operation fee and hospital bills had to be paid by the end of the day.
  • However, she noticed that Director Sibbell still hadn't returned from the meeting room. She bet Darius was in there as well, so she knew this was not a good time to text him, or it'd only piss him off and make things worse for her.
  • Thus, she had no choice but to wait patiently.
  • After 10.00PM that night, Charlotte dragged her exhausted body into the elevator after working overtime, and lo and behold, Darius was standing inside when the door opened.
  • When she saw him, Charlotte instantly returned alive and hid in the elevator's corner.
  • The down payment issue had been bothering her nearly all day, and seeing it was just the two of them, she gathered her courage. "President Leynthall."
  • "Mm." Darius gave a perfunctory answer as he stood in front of her.
  • From the way they conversed, they didn't look like a married couple or even one that had done the deed at all.
  • "From what I remember, the contract stated that I'd get two hundred thousand as down payment after signing it. Well, the money…" One could call her thick-skinned, for she was asking him for money. Even more so, she was still an undergraduate.
  • "Has it not been transferred to you?" Never once did Darius turn to look at Charlotte, who stood behind him.
  • "Yeah, not yet."
  • "Do you need it urgently?"
  • Do I need it urgently?! Of course, I do! I only have less than two hours left before the end of the day!
  • "I thought Aloysius had already transferred it to you. Send me your account number." Darius was no-nonsense, asking for her bank account number straight instead of dwelling on whether she was desperate or not.
  • "I'll give it to you once I'm on the bus." His no-nonsense attitude finally relieved her.
  • When the elevator arrived at the lobby, Darius exited without saying a word.
  • There weren't many passengers on the bus, and after Charlotte boarded, she took her bank card out and took a picture of it with the number clearly displayed. Then, she sent it to Darius.
  • Soon after, she got a notification telling her two hundred thousand had been transferred to her bank account.
  • Just as Charlotte was praising him for being no-nonsense, she got a message from him. 'If you can be slightly more diligent and type the numbers out, the money could've been transferred to you thirty seconds sooner.'
  • Charlotte was speechless. Was he calling her lazy?
  • Worried that it would affect her marriage merit, she gilded the lily and replied, 'Well, here's the thing, President. The bus is packed with people, so it's inconvenient for me to text it.'
  • 'You need it urgently, yet you worry about inconveniences?'
  • Charlotte was once again speechless.
  • After all was said and done, it was still about her desperation for the money.
  • Just as she was at a loss for what to say, Darius sent another text over. 'Go to Myrefall with me this Saturday to visit my grandfather.'
  • Charlotte felt glum for a moment before she replied, 'How many days will we be there for?'
  • 'We'll depart on Saturday morning, stay overnight, and return on Sunday.'
  • She had to be honest; she was happy to hear that they would be visiting his grandfather. After all, her incentives all revolved around 'Grandfather', and only by visiting him could she get more money.
  • On Friday, Charlotte visited her mother; post-surgery Audrey was doing much better now. She had also asked Dr. Frost to keep an eye on any caretaker in the hospital he thought was suitable and if he could hire them on her behalf.
  • Unexpectedly, Charlotte entered Audrey's ward to find Aiden, who could never be contacted unless he wanted to be.
  • Aiden was pretty much incompetent, but he was pretty decent at driving, and he had recently found a new job as a driver for the CEO of a tech company.
  • "Charlotte, what do you say I set you up with somebody?" Aiden grinned.
  • However, Charlotte ignored her brother. As if his fair-weather friends could be any decent. Besides, she was now a wedded woman on paper. She would never do something like cheat on Darius, only to provide him with leverage on her.
  • "Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not in the mood for it right now. We'll see when Mom wakes up." Charlotte held Audrey's hand and pressed it to her face.
  • "When Mom wakes up? That would be never," Aiden blurted.
  • She ignored him, upset by his words.
  • "I remember there used to be a lot of guys who went after you. Besides, that guy—what's his name again? He's dead. Are you really never going to marry anyone else because of him?" Had Aiden come to visit his mother? Of course not. He barely ever did, and he had come this time to trap Charlotte.
  • "Don't mention him! You don't deserve to!" Charlotte lambasted.
  • Aiden knew he should leave it at that when she was already looking grim. It was her sore spot, and he didn't want to piss her off either.
  • After a pause, he said, "Alright, alright, I won't. Jesus, look at you. Anyhow, the person I'm setting you up with is President Chester's son, a typical born-to-the-purple. He's rich and handsome. Do you really not want to think about it?"
  • However, Charlotte said nothing. In fact, she ignored him completely.
  • Seeing how stubborn his sister was, Aiden flew into a rage. "Charlotte Joslin, a person needs to know just how much they're worth! You may have the looks, but billions are in the same league as you. Don't think so highly of yourself! Also, we need money to keep Mom in the hospital. I can't believe this! As her daughter, you won't even take her medical bills into account for a second. You're a disgrace!"
  • Charlotte just closed her eyes and let Aiden's words drift past her ears.
  • "You ungrateful wench," Aiden cursed and left when he saw that his sister was just ignoring him.
