Chapter 3 We've Moved In Together

  • Charlotte looked around the room to find no one else but them.
  • "Yes, I was talking to you," Darius said.
  • "Sorry, what was it?"
  • "Marry me," he enunciated.
  • It was only then that she slowly brought her mind to the topic of marrying Darius.
  • However, she was still stumped. There was still one month before she graduated, and she couldn't help but wonder if he was testing her. After all, it wouldn't be good rep for a CEO to have slept with an intern, though he practically hadn't suffered any losses. He probably wanted to see if Charlotte had any thoughts that she shouldn't have.
  • The young woman felt at a crossroads. To her, Darius was naturally different from other men due to his warm embrace and his eyes, as well as the fact that they had sex—though by mistake. However, she also knew it was impossible for them to ever be together. Not in this life, not ever.
  • The reason Darius wanted to marry Charlotte, someone way below his league, was certainly not because he had feelings for her.
  • Then, she recalled how Darius had 'reminded' her when he returned her phone. At that, she was growing more certain he felt worried she would bring trouble to him.
  • Thus, she lied. "I already have a boyfriend."
  • "Are you guys engaged?" Darius pressed on.
  • "No, not yet. We haven't graduated, after all. We don't have the financial stability." Charlotte graced under pressure, feigning calmness.
  • "In that case, how far are you guys in the relationship?" Darius seemed to be surprisingly concerned about her private life.
  • Unsure where Darius was going with this, she blurted, "We've… already moved in together."
  • In other words, she was trying to convey that she had a boyfriend and was intimate with him. Since she was worried that her partner would overthink things, she wouldn't ramble about sleeping with another man all the time. Moreover, she'd bring whatever happened during the team building retreat down to her grave, so Darius wouldn't have to worry.
  • "You guys are living together?" Darius furrowed his brows slightly. That night, she was clearly…
  • When she saw the doubt on his face, Charlotte instantly knew what he was thinking and hurriedly added, "I've been with this boyfriend for years, and we've only moved in together after the team building retreat. After all, We only moved out of the dorm not too long ago and had just recently found the right place."
  • "Are you not curious at all why I would ask you to marry me?" Darius wasn't shocked to learn that Charlotte has a boyfriend.
  • "Why?"
  • "My grandfather is critically ill, and he wishes to see me getting married while he's still alive. However, I do not have a girlfriend. As to why I would ask you, I'm sure you know better than anyone else. I've searched around and found that you're still the most suitable." Darius' tone made it seem as though everything was under his control as he sat behind his desk.
  • The words 'You're still the most suitable' inevitably hurt Charlotte's pride a little. They had already danced in the sheets, so she was naturally the most fitting candidate.
  • If he went to someone else, they might think more than twice about it. However, if it was her, they could skip this part entirely.
  • Though it was already a no-brainer that Darius wasn't marrying her out of love, hearing his reason still made her a little disappointed.
  • It looked like he hadn't just remembered that night—he remembered it vividly. More than that, there were hints of disdain toward her in his voice. Although he was the one who had asked for her help, she was still nothing to him.
  • Yet, she couldn't blame him. In his eyes, she was just a woman who conspired to have sex with her boss. Once she succeeded, she deliberately left her phone in his room. It was evident she was fishing for a rich man, yet she played hard to get, acting like a goody-two-shoes. Could she expect him not to look down on her?
  • "You can make any demands." Darius spoke with disdain laced in his voice. "However, it better not be over five million."
  • Five million was indeed a large sum, but to Charlotte, it wasn't one that she couldn't entirely refuse.
  • After a moment of silence, she euphemistically suggested, "President, you can consider coming up with a fake certificate instead."
  • "It'll be troublesome if my grandfather figures out." Darius was rather patient with answering her questions. "Also, the certificate is not as crucial as finding the person. My grandfather will only be assured after he sees her."
  • Charlotte nodded with a slight delay and bit her lip, wondering how she should refuse him.
  • When he saw Charlotte's hesitation, Darius added, "There's a deadline to this marriage. If you agree, we'll sign the marriage certificate tomorrow. As for the deadline—"
  • "I don't agree to it!" Charlotte said righteously.
  • Darius didn't get to say what he wanted to before Charlotte interrupted him, and he simply bored into the woman's eyes. This was the first time someone had refused his offer without even negotiating.
