Chapter 16 Who's Her Sugar Daddy?

  • Charlotte was typing away on her laptop at the desk.
  • "What are you writing?" The desk was placed in front of the bed, so Charlotte's back was facing Darius. She assumed Darius probably thought the atmosphere was too dull, so he struck up a conversation.
  • "I'm writing my valedictorian speech," answered Charlotte half-heartedly while typing.
  • "You?"
  • Charlotte thought his reply sounded more and more off. Just how horrible of a human did he think she was?!
  • With that, she turned around and bore into Darius. "What's the matter, President Leynthall? Don't you know NeoEast only ever hires outstanding graduates? How did I manage to pass my internship if I'm not outstanding? Or am I actually not, and that you're the one who instructed your subordinates to keep me in the company so that you can better control me?"
  • Darius had said that without thinking much, but who'd have thought she'd use it against him? More than that, her every word was on point.
  • He long figured out she was no simple woman.
  • Since he was done talking to Charlotte, Darius closed his book and went to wash up.
  • After speaking out of bounds in the heat of the moment, the woman felt regretful. He was her boss, as well as the CEO of NeoEast. Moreover, it was indeed rude of her to respond like that when she was just an employee at the bottom of the hierarchy. With her mood affected, she couldn't focus on her speech anymore, so she went to wash up as well.
  • By the time Darius returned to the bedroom, Charlotte was already sitting in bed.
  • While he returned to his book, Charlotte made small talk. "President, what did you say to convince them to let me stay in the Finance Department?" It was also a question she had wanted to have the answer to.
  • "Do you think I need to explain to them why I want to retain an intern?" Darius retorted inattentively.
  • I knew it. I only got to stay because Darius mentioned it to HR, Charlotte mused.
  • "People will think otherwise if you don't explain, though."
  • At that, Darius swept his gaze inattentively to her. "Think otherwise? Was our one-night stand a dream, and are you not married to me?"
  • Charlotte lay down speechlessly, then slowly drifted to sleep as she listened to the sounds of Darius flipping through the pages, switching off the lights, and lying down.
  • Unsurprisingly, Darius transferred a hundred thousand to Charlotte's bank account on their journey back to Wimbourn this time.
  • It was two hundred thousand less than the last time because the housekeeper had made their meals this time.
  • However, neither of them said anything.
  • Now, she'd feel uncomfortable every time Darius gave her money. As for why she felt that way, she had no clue.
  • After dropping Charlotte off at where they picked her up, the Mercedes-Benz drove away.
  • Before she could reach her dorm, she received a text from the HR director, Alyssa Ryan. 'Charlotte, the unit you're now staying in is just a temporary arrangement. Unit 1507 is now empty. A female employee from the Operating Department got married and has moved into her new home with her husband. You and Lucia Hale can move to the two-person unit. What do you say?'
  • The message took Charlotte aback. Just because Darius couldn't stand the stench of her musky clothes, he switched her to a different unit, and a two-person one at that. Alas, those high up in the hierarchy could get a say in everything.
  • Lucia had checked out unit 1507 earlier. It was as big as their current four-person dorm, but it was made for two people.
  • Throughout the entire afternoon, Lucia's lips never touched each other, constantly saying it was pennies from heaven while she packed up and switched dorms.
  • After settling into unit 1507, Charlotte had been busy washing her clothes. She thought she should give all her musty-smelling clothes a good wash, after all.
  • "Charlotte, Charlotte, look at this. It's really maddening…" Lucia shouted while Charlotte was washing her clothes in the bathroom. In no time, Lucia came over with her laptop in her hand.
  • "Didn't you visit your mom in the hospital yesterday? Look at what these guys are saying."
  • After turning the tap off, Charlotte turned her attention to the laptop with her head tilted.
  • The screen was displaying the company's forum, 'Roundtable'. It was an active webpage, for tens of thousands of employees would constantly post and comment on it.
  • The post that was on display was titled, 'Who's her sugar daddy?'
  • There were dozens of pictures attached, all of which were of Charlotte at La Luna Cafe, taken by other people. She was wearing a decent dress and even had makeup on. It was evident she had deliberately dressed up. Later, she got into a high-end Mercedes-Benz. Before entering, she even looked to her left and right.
  • The windows of the car were heavily tinted, so no one could see who was sitting inside, so that was why everyone was guessing who her so-called sugar daddy was.
  • Everyone was super interested in this kind of gossip. More and more people commented on it, and in no time, it became a trending post.
  • Lucia commented as well, trying to clear things up. 'This is my roommate. I swear she went to the hospital yesterday.'
  • However, her words weren't very convincing, and someone quickly replied by saying, 'Would you visit the hospital dolled up? It's not like it's forbidden to park a car at the gates of our dorm. Why did she have to go all the way there and not have the person wait at our gates? Also, I heard she competed for a spot in NeoEast with a graduate from Krone University. Why does she get to stay instead of that graduate? She always applies for leave while that graduate has been so dedicated to their work. I swear something's fishy.'
  • 'Watch what you're saying. She has someone backing her.'
  • 'I saw her toasting the HR deputy director during the team building retreat. Maybe…'
  • All sorts of comments and assumptions were thrown out, but all in all, none were pleasant.
  • Yes, Charlotte had indeed toasted the HR deputy director, but she had done it with Bennett. Alas, someone had used this to target her. It was typical of internal backstabbing in large companies.
