• “Why are you so embarrassed?” Lucas asks softly, crouching until he’s at eye level with me. His voice is warm, almost teasing, and it wraps around me like silk. “I like that you took them.”
• I don’t look at him. Instead, I keep my gaze fixed on my feet, pretending they’re the most fascinating things in the room. I can feel the weight of his eyes on me, studying my face, reading every flicker of emotion. After a moment, he straightens with a quiet sigh and folds the shirt I’d stolen, placing it neatly back into the drawer as if he’s giving me time to gather my composure.
• Without saying a word, Lucas opens the drawer next to it, his broad fingers rummaging around until he produces a red strapless bra. He holds it out toward me with a casual confidence, as if it’s the most natural thing in the world for him to be picking out my undergarments.
