  • I hum quietly, not at all surprised by the way Lucas clings to me in his sleep. It took time—months, maybe—to grow used to the all-encompassing warmth of him. Longer still to grow accustomed to the way his heavy limbs seem to claim my body as his blanket, as if his soul could only rest when mine was beneath him.
  • His chest rises and falls rhythmically against my back, the heat of his breath brushing the back of my neck. But even without touching our bond, I can sense the tension rippling beneath the surface. Lucas isn’t sleeping peacefully. Not really.
  • A low chuckle rumbles in his throat. It’s soft, but it doesn’t reach his eyes when he stirs and meets my gaze.
