Chapter 56
- The highway was a graveyard. A long, silent river of rusted metal and shattered glass, flowing through the heart of the gray, dead city. It was our gas station. And our killing field.
- “Overwatch in position,” Ash’s voice crackled over the radio, the sound a comforting, familiar presence in the oppressive silence. “Got a clear view of the whole damn shooting gallery. Anything moves, we’ll see it.”
- I looked up at the roof of the hospital, a massive, skeletal ruin against the gray sky. I could just make out two small, dark figures, Ash and Yara, their weapons glinting faintly in the dim light. They were our guardian angels.
