Chapter 38

• The alpha Shrieker hit our line like a freight train.
• It was a nightmare of pale flesh and corded muscle, its sightless head swinging from side to side as it zeroed in on the sound of our panicked breaths. Val’s soldiers opened fire, their rifles barking in a deafening chorus, but the bullets seemed to just ricochet off its unnaturally tough hide.
• “It’s not working!” one of them screamed as the creature swatted him aside like a rag doll, his body hitting the rooftop railing with a sickening crunch.
