- The dust from the collapsed tunnel was still thick in the air, a choking, gray cloud that tasted of stone and death.
- “We can’t stay here,” Ash’s voice was a low, urgent command that cut through the ringing in our ears. “They know our general position. They’ll regroup. They’ll come back.”
- Mark didn’t respond. He was on his knees, staring at the wall of rubble he had created, his face a pale, vacant mask. The screams of the captives and the raiders were gone, but I knew he could still hear them. They would be a ghost in his head for the rest of his life.
