• "What is it you're telling him that you can't tell me?" Kane demanded, grabbing a bottle of wine that someone had sitting on the center island countertop. He smashed it, and glass flew all around them, feeling only minimal satisfaction when he saw the red liquid splatter all around. "Why the hell would you wander off without waking me up? Do you know what I thought? I thought someone got you! I thought I was going to find you dead. I thought I was going to have to bury you just like Blaine," he screamed now, feeling the tension in his neck. He was so angry and also relieved she was okay that he couldn't handle the emotions exploding out of him. He stepped toward her, and Declan stepped in between them, shielding her from his line of vision. He could snap him in half with his bare hands for thinking he had the right to protect her from him.
• "I'm going to give you a pass because of what today is, and the fact that she makes you psychotic by just breathing," Declan said, sounding like he was in a debate instead of a fist fight. Kane absolutely lost his composure. She was his to protect, not his. "Go calm down, and we'll explain everything; it's not what you think, Kane."
