• “Jesus,” Cruz hissed as he and Wilder caught up to Celeste, steering her away from her intended destination.
• “We’re going to be besties until after Kane’s fight,” Wilder said playfully, slinging an arm around Celeste's shoulders and guiding her toward the woods. He made a point to rub his free hand over every raised tombstone they passed. Students chattered as they made their way to the fight ring. “If I die before you, make sure I don’t get buried here. I’d rather just rot in a landfill.” He lifted a shoulder as if to indicate he’d said something much less morbid.
• Celeste held her pinky finger up to him, which he grasped with his own, solidifying their deal. She decided to push her luck. “How about you let me go and tell Kane I ran off?”
