• The peace of the mountain safe house was shattered in the dead of night. Maya jolted awake to the sound of breaking glass, her heart hammering in her chest. For a moment, she froze, the darkness around her feeling suffocating. Then she heard it again—a low thud, followed by the unmistakable creak of floorboards.
• "Rafael,”she whispered, shaking him awake. “Someone’s here.”
• Rafael was instantly alert, his hand reaching under the bed for his gun. He moved to the window, parting the curtain just enough to see the faint outlines of shadows moving against the moonlit trees.
